Carl (シャーロ Sharo[?]) is an original character by Guchiry and the protagonist of the song Schadenfreude.
He is a ghost who befriends people with a misfortunate lives, haunting them until they eventually commit suicide. His identity is unknown,[1] making him an unidentified entity who likes watching people suffer as his hobby.[2]
Appearance[]

Carl is a ghost with the appearance of an upper-grade elementary school kid[3] with bright purple eyes and choppy pink hair. He wears a long purple sailor-styled collar, black shortalls, and a white undershirt that has three purple buttons. He wears below-knee-level purple socks with purple bands connecting them, and black penny loafers.
His appearance can change such as in Vanish where he looks more dark purple, however, the main components of his outfit are the same.
Personality[]
Carl is a sadistic ghost who enjoys turning his favorite people into his friends, who are ghosts.[4] He seeks enjoyment from people being miserable to the point of eventually commit suicide while he grins as they do so. He's shown to be pessimistic about the world, calling it 'unfair' and 'unforgiving' whilst also finding it amusing at the same time. Carl knows that his actions are wrong but doesn't care about the potential consequences of it, remarking that he will go to hell for his wrongdoings.
Relationships[]
Michiko Ame[]
Even though Carl and Michiko first interacted in Rainy Girl, Carl has observed her closely with interest before as she fell to lower and lower levels until he appears to her from behind and goes to hug her, possibly leading her to lose her breath after he invites her to the Midnight Ball. Carl is curious about Michiko and wants to know what her expression would look like if she became even more unhappy. He would stalk her and watch her, interested in what she would do next, whispering to her then disappearing abruptly. Despite this, Michiko seems to trust Carl and viewed him as a friend while the same can't be said for Carl as he sees her as entertainment for her misery.[5][6]
Luchika[]
Carl first appears outside Luchika's house at night tempting him to follow him and making him spiral further, leading to his death. It's assumed afterwards that Luchika becomes a ghost with Carl afterwards.[7]

Etymology[]
His name in Japanese, Sharo, is derived from his image song Shaadenfuroide (シャーデンフロイデ Schadenfreude[?]), Sha (シャー[?]) and ro (ロ[?]).[8]
His name in English, Carl, is a North Germanic male name meaning "free man", however it is said to carry no meaning.[9]
Story[]
Carl follows and watches many victims of unfortunate situations, enticing them to commit suicide to see their misery and to keep them around as ghosts. He then gathers them in a mansion deep in a forest where each night the Midnight Ball is held. The origins of this happening, or Carl himself remain unknown.[4][10][11]
Midnight Showtime and Soiree in Darkness[]

His first known victim was most likely Shou, a kind-hearted man in his 20s who had lost his wife, Sophie. The fact which Carl later used to lure him into the ball. One day Shou found a mysterious invitation without "an addressee, nor wax seal", which can be only assumed to be conveniently left out there by Carl. This eventually lead him to the midnight dance hall, where he met the ghost of his late wife, choosing to stay with her at the ball, which ultimately sealed his fate.[12][13][14][15]
Rainy Girl and Schadenfreude[]

Carl has been quietly observing Michiko's misfortunate life situation in amusement for some time before properly interacting with her. He makes his first contact with Michiko appearing from behind her to hug her only to disappear and for her to start choking. Later in the MV, Carl appears to her once again near the end of Michiko's walk through the city, seemingly awaiting her arrival on the 3rd Avenue. Michiko smiled as she reached out to Carl, only for him to disappear again, leaving her to fall onto the ground as he smiles at this situation.[5][16][17]
Carl invites Michiko to the Midnight Ball.
In his image song, Schadenfreude, Michiko's story is told from his perspective. He observes her at the escalator tripping over, and he only helped her to see how she begs for help. At the end of Schadenfreude, he dances with Michiko and later remarks that there is no god and fate.
The events of Rainy Girl and Schadenfreude are seemingly intertwined, most noticeably by Michiko's outfit changes.
Vanish[]
Carl's another victim was Luchika, a young artist who lost his friend Dahlia in a fire that occurred on her wedding and has isolated himself after said incident.[7][18]

There is possible evidence of Carl being involved in the series of murders that occurred on the 3rd Avenue.[19][20][21]
The cases of said murders is also currently under investigation by Mitsuru and Haruki who are on the track of catching "Crown", but they haven't reached any decisive conclusions yet.
