Astraea (アストレア Asutorea[?]) is an original character by Guchiry and the protagonist of the song Disappointment.
She is the god of love and justice who changed her appearance to blend in the human world.[2]
Her human alias goes by the name Cassandra (カサンドラ Kasandora[?]), featuring in the song Lamentation.
Appearance[]
Astraea's goddess form has long golden hair reaching the top of her thighs, and bangs. Her eyes are pink and blue. She wears an elegant white and pink dress that goes outwards towards the bottom with a ribbon tied at the waist. Astraea has long stoles hanging off her left shoulder with a helix pattern and two golden edges. She wears a pair of opal earrings, a gold choker with another embedded opal hanging off it, and a pair of gold cuffs. She holds a golden staff with a balance scale to represent her status as the god of justice. She's over 170cm tall.[3]
In her human form (Cassandra), she has dark purple hair of the same length as her goddess form. Her eyes are still the same pink and blue color.
Additionally, in Fallin' Dead Relive Life, her human form's hair covers her left eye and is straighter.
Personality[]
Astraea is a rational god who doesn't understand human emotions.[4]
In Disappointment, Astraea is shown to find humans disgusting, even having a breakdown in the process. She appears to be nihilistic, with her "[looking] down in distain" and "[having] given up", along with her saying that "nothing will be changed" and "nothing can be changed".
Relationships[]
Crowley[]
He is one of the only people Astraea actually cares about, and was the first person Astraea had ever show care to. She raised him from an early age when he was left an orphan after the Ten Years' War, leading him to become the leader of the Cult of the Abandoned City.[5]
Tadashi Kunai[]
She doesn't care about him at all. She influenced his cult by suggesting the "story", after which she did not participate in his cult until his demise.[6][7]
Mercedes[]
Although Astraea initially didn't care about anyone but Crowley, she has started to be concerned for Mercedes, who is always around her.[5]
Tetra[]
Tetra is Astraea's pet fish given to her by followers as a gift. Astraea uses her powers to transform Tetra into a human.
Etymology[]
Astraea is the latinized form of the Greek Ἀστραία (Astraia), and derived from Greek ἀστήρ (aster) which means "star".[8]
Cassandra comes from the Greek name Κασσάνδρα (Kassandra), it was possibly derived from κέκασμαι (kekasmai) which means "to excel, to shine" and ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man" ἀνδρός (genitive).[9]
Both of the names are taken from Greek mythology.
Story[]
Eden[]
The Secret Fruit.
In the beginning, there was an era during which both humans and gods happily co-existed side by side. However, one fateful day, a human reached for the Secret Fruit due to the indifference of one of the gods.[10] Thus, a feeling of "greed" was born in people, and wars broke out in various places. This disturbed the gods to such an extent that, one by one, they all abandoned humans and fled to heaven. However, one goddess still believed in humans; Astraea.[11][12]
Wandering[]
It's unclear what really happened to Astraea during the events of the Great Flood and Rite of Salvation, but it's suggested that she experienced a series of betrayals,[13] and eventually disguised herself as one with the humans, changing her appearance and going under a new alias as Cassandra.[2][11][14]
At times, she even warned the inhabitants of a certain area that she was living at about an incoming disaster, only for them to ignore and later even blame on her. That moment was when she finally gave up on humans, leaving her completely disappointed in them.[15][16]
Astraea stumbles upon Crowley in course of her wandering at the end of the Disappointment music video.
One day, in the course of her wandering, she met a lonely boy sitting in the back of an alleyway named Crowley.[17] He was orphaned after the death of his parents during the Ten Years' War. She stopped in front of him and muttered something to herself before deciding to take him in and raise him.[1][18][19][20]
Cult of the Abandoned City[]
Astraea built a system that utilized human desires, and used her own power for Crowley's benefit. She instructed him to act in a divine way that greatly increased his number of followers. It was successful in the beginning, with Crowley being pleased with the "love" he received from them.[1][21]
Astraea grins at Tadashi.
In the meantime, she also supposedly met Tadashi and suggested a story to him. This resulted in Tadashi establishing a new religion where he claimed to be the rightful messenger of the God himself, taking some elements from the Cult of the Abandoned City for himself along the way. Although Astraea didn't participate in his cult whatsoever, she did appear at the time of his execution[6], smiling at him and thinking to herself that this would enrich Crowley's life even more.[22][23]
One day Astraea encountered Mercedes, a woman who was overwhelmed by her younger brother's death. Astraea brought her to the church. Mercedes met Crowley and became a fanatic of the religion, joining the Cult of the Abandoned City in the process.[24][25][26][27]
